The love story of Legend of the Mountain was another dive into a new genre for King Hu. We follow the story of a student traveler who wishes to find a new job in the country to start a new life. As he tries to fulfill the task of translating Buddhist sutras, he bumps into a beautiful drum player, and old woman and a flutist.
Hu focused on love triangle between the student and the strange people he ends up meeting. There is also a theme of magic that is apparent throughout the film, but soon begins to become more fleshed out as ghosts. There are a lot of plot twists within the film that keep it interesting, and Hu developed the characters to be feel real, relate able and also empathetic.
Legend of the Mountain is a new genre of King Hu’s filmography and I definitely recommend others to watch this film.
